AHPRA has released updated guidance for Psychologists in the form of fact sheets supporting the new draft of Professional competencies for psychology due to come into effect on 1 December 2025.
In addition to setting out the standard of competence expected of psychologists, the guidance suggests that practices should consider implementing an Artificial Intelligence Policy to guide the use of this technology.
This Artificial Intelligence Policy adopts the language of AHPRA’s professional competencies. It includes terms covering:
- The processes and standards necessary to meet AHPRA requirements for use of current and emerging Digital Technologies including Artificial Intelligence;
- Distinguishing the risk, uses and protective processes necessary for various AI systems;
- The standard of informed consent for use of AI by practitioners;
- Defining the standard of Digital Competence for practitioners in using AI and similar emerging technologies;
- Guidelines for use of Artificial intelligence and the disclosure of Personal Information in compliance with the Australian Privacy Principles;
- Risk Appetite Statement for the Practice;
- Mechanisms for oversight, notification and audit of practitioners use of AI;
- Optional terms which adjust the oversight level of a practitioner’s use of Artificial Intelligence;
- Optional terms that prohibit use of data as AI Training data;
- Optional terms on the ‘Right to be Forgotten’; and
- Appendix 1: Steps to evaluate the efficacy and security of a digital health app.
While this policy covers Artificial Intelligence, it is a drafted to cover all emerging technologies that may rely on large language models for extractive and generative outputs. This policy is intended to complement a Privacy Policy (not included in this product).
